New York 2010, a gutted and cleaned fish at an Asian market.
I'm not kidding. There are no Homeless people in NY, that once magnigificent body of vagrancy, transition arts, lieing in your path for you to step over, give change to, check your own status of existence. GONE Riding the subway, walking the streets there is no signs of life, no writing on the walls other than corporate, state cant tell the difference, I found a single sticker on a cross walk, saying hey you Know, we don't know who blew up the trade towers.. maybe we should find out... Posters in everyother subway car say, hey brother, if you see a homeless person, give us a call, and we will pick them up, take them away, to some where better.. HOW CAN YOU ARGUE.. i can feel the sleep of good time coming over me, so good, take them away. out of my sight to another site, where I think of them no more.. to where the garbage goes.
Sleep. I do see this poster, it's maybe an art project, .. A single black girl standing next to a warehouse, with the numbers 15 printed next to her, in the smaller print the 15 turns to 15,000 children will be sleeping in homeless shelters in NY tonight. 15,000 children. I don't even see'em.
in 2005, on Wall St I attempted to take a picture of a large Radical Rauschenberg sitting in a Lobby of some BAnk, from the footpath, through the windowed door, A cop comes up to me and tells me that he will arrest me if I take that picture. As an AMarican I almost punched his head in. Never tell an american He aint free or they will go around killing and maiming just to prove to you how free they are, easy rider.....
How am i meant to think about this, or feel, or react, the decision is clearly mine but to be treated like i have options is to imagine a citizenry of independent educated means, I'm barely making it slave grade, passing off my papers as accidents i'm embarrassed about, assuring everyone it's ok I don't have an opinion, I don't want to talk. sure I'm ready to join the movement, but it seems a generation or two from gaining consciousness enough to do anything definitive. Perhaps NY, this traditional magnetic pole of electric american current, L.A on one side, NY the other, needed to fall, let in the void between, Chicargo, Detroit, St Louis rise of the great Black Carbon Cities, post education, post pain, post economic reform, just real hate and a will to enact the showdown between rich and poor, NY Disney is a slow kill, dazed I walk around and see the people working there. Going down town, our cab driver winced as a cops siren politely wheazed by, THis city he seemed to say, this city,,,, has gone ...
WELL WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT>.. I'm WALKING HERE I"M WALKING HERE, midnight cowboy, being tough in NY like a painted face that's gone now. I can't be angry, a poor wage slave, I'm walking here, 911 trauma has been really heavy. So heavy that NY has not been let to recover. Something is keeping that gap in the tooth, that hole free, empty, where a NEW YORKIAN would have a building there in two weeks this otherness has taken over and everything has changed. there are still the donut builders filling up the positions of desire everyday.. so the net of creative industries are still being thrown out, just your working in a ghost town, without a back drop of real life unafraid.
NY is Afraid. Striking out at shadows randomly, like they've become unable to cast one themselves..
He the man, that Flake , living in the city , keeping it real through all the Disney crap. NYC and the Silver Studio in his soul.
I do believe it! Why bother with a death of a thousand cuts, when two big ones will suffice? They were so overblown in their thinking, "pride cometh before the fall"
Silver studio soul... hope not but great analogy. THough must ahve something like that brewing under it all, definitely have drunk deep from that trough, Warhol master of the american way...
When I went to London for the first time I was amazed that all the silly old books I have read were true and there really was a toy St James Palace with Guards and all, a Bermondsey, Bethnal Green Road and Holborn. Paris was an old film set which I was trapped oddly in- it still was the city of light , though all the fame had long gone home. L.A. was the best, so heartless, so luxurious, so polite and sinful, nobody actually came from California there in Silver Lakes.
I have never been to New York, in my mind it is always 1979 Andy Warhol handing out Interviews on the street, when I get there I hope there is some of that still going somewhere...
flake - the vagrants go to florida for winter/spring... well a lot of them of them... seriously
>muffled groaning - warhol turning in his grave >gasps/moans then shuffle, shuffle - homeless leaving warhol's grave for sunny miami---
are knob quint - if i ever have the displeasure of meeting you i will be representing those many thousands from ALL affected sides; the innocent cleaners, receptionists, brokers, workers, firemen, afghanis, their kids etc. etc. etc. and their families/friends/compatriots - paying for their overblown thinking (what is their 'overblown thinking'? paying for a roof and food?) ... and yes i am affected too
these people living their lives, whether 'free' or those living under a regime, dreaming of your freedom. a freedom that you are abusing in the MOST hateful and dispassionate way.
'your arrogance/ignorance will be coming before a fall'
JUST FUCK OFF - your comment is completely abhorrent (its meaning could only ever be justified through a suprematist/rascism ideology or some twisted idea of 'collateral damage' through a suprematist/rascist ideology (which has been twisted enough already))
"Good" people are not always good and that is a wide spread condition. There are two main modes of being when dealing with self perception. Contrition and conceit. You benjamin are quite obviously conceited (as are most westerners). Conceited people always consider themselves good people. I don't view myself that way. I am fully aware that that sort of thinking causes me to think I am better than others and I know that is not true. America was much like this nation of ours is now, conceited. After the US was chastised it is now much more realistic about it's perception as a nation and a conscience is now flourishing which is aware of the evils and impacts that it spreads. You are most likely opposed to all I say, so there is little point in me going on... our societies have much trouble perceiving how offensive we appear from the outside and that lack of self awareness means we will always be in danger
Artists are what they do. Its hopeless, but no artist has ever given up on what they did, because it became them, it influenced their surroundings and put them into the history books. Knowledge is power but within aesthetic realms of perception, perspectives of morality and immorality can become influential on society by how ‘what artists do’ is perceived backwards by the blind. Consciousness of this is a problem for all who are aesthetically attuned, because what they do with this power/curse, is what they are. Its for none to judge, nor does clarifying it to oneself or being judged by others help to make being an artist any easier. To ‘know thyself’ is the greatest joke ever told wherein 'the greater good' is the punch line. Like all jokes when the punch line is given away, its not so funny anymore.
1% of the worlds population owns 40% of the worlds wealth, 50% of the worlds population lives off less then 2 dollars a day.
‘It is no matter of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.’
Thank you moresoap, That is my entire gag really... "‘It is no matter of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.’ Jiddu Krishnamurti" That is exactly how I feel. I perceive it to be civic duty to protest against the greedy and self-satisfied west at all times and that protesting should never be reduced to a teenage and/or university days fad. Remember those days, you educated dummies? Johnny Cash said it another way;
Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.
I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.
I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.
Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.
I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.
And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.
Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.
Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.
I've heard that New Zelend had the highest approval rates for Obama in the develped world. HOw did i hear this I don't know.. why would this be said.. who wants me to know.. All i know is the latest issue of White Fungus spells out in sharp detail how NZ unlike south America and other countries turned over it's wealth with out a fight, total corporate take over of all our publicly generated weatlh, porfit taken from this country funds the empires righteous war and binds us to it's ideology of don't ask, don't tell. We are all undercover in the militiary of big business. We followed the flags and symbols of Labour as some party for the people, ignoring it's actual real actions..(cue Obama land) individual achievements like Leaglising prostittuion gave us the feeling that social progess was being made while fundamental changes (hey "public Option" health care- no where near the orignial arguments for national health care) , like the privitasiation of our health care happening in an environment that most importantly can offer absolutely no resistence. As the left has evaborated there is no position presented to stand and represent a broad audience.. That has been the true victory of the corporate state, to eliminate true opossition so that it can manufacture descent! Pull all the strings..
I agree that the homeless move to florida for the winter.. but you are forgetting that some don't own cars, bus passes, id, no the point I was making is that as everythign changes here are some of my observations.. winter to winter over the last 10 years.. Manhatten alwyas the show boat is cleaner than ever.. so clean that you can see teh electrc nodes beign attatched, and the memories bouncing around the cities walls as they are pressed into extinction.. traditions here are beign seriously threatened.. simulacra filled up to the brim becomes food. Like research projects becoming legitimae art before they are assessed, qualification has surpassed actual experience. As teh experience has been forgotten , there is nothign to connect it to, no larger mission other than the confident self, in a purchase consume with confidence. YOu are an equal.
I wear the clothes of my enemy so they can't see me coming.
Honesty is the the greatest risk of them all, there is no end to that perspective in reality. If thats all you've got then I think its more then enough.
Oh Flake, can't stop hustling White Fungus, you midnight cowboy hustler of New york.
True, I did work for them for a while, but I don't now. Still no one else does the product they do..
buy it or subscribe online today.
If you do the product that you do, I think you work for reality, otherwise you wouldn't be working for them deliberately.
Great article by Pilger on the U.S Empire on Znet....here in NZ we seem to be bombarded with pro-Israeli media output in the form of films and docos about the holocaust...Band of Brothers, the egregrious film by Tarantino- the Inglorious Barstedos, and a film about Anne Frank the 14 yr old Jewish Girl who died in the Nazi concentration camps but left behind a diary of her experiences. I mention this last because the anniversary of the death of another brave young women who died fighting fascism has just gone by unmarked by our news media. Her name is Racheal Corrie, a 23 year old American student and she was killed by an Israeli bulldozer whilst trying to prevent it demolishing Palestinian homes on March the 16th, 2003.
This week, Richard Purssell, a British activist and eyewitness, recalled how he watched in horror as Corrie was dragged four meters by the 56-ton D9 Caterpillar bulldozer moving forward at a “fast pace.†She disappeared under the rubble and lethal blades of Caterpillar and then the bulldozer reversed, trampling Corrie, or what remained of her, once again. When her horrified fellow-activists rushed to her, she was still breathing. “I think my back is broken,†she said before she breathed her last.
So...a young, idealistic student dies fighting the Empire, [Israel being an integral part]....yet where are the eulogies in the media, the docos, the movie....nothing, just silence. She died for the "wrong" cause
Pilger writes how Western artists are for the most part complicit in these crimes committed by the Empire and its lackeys...we bury our heads in arcane French theory and pursue those M.A's whilst our tax dollars are transformed into bullets and high explosives that rip apart the bodies of peasents. We adust the content of Derrida and worry if theres enough"critical" commentary in our work...meanwhile real revolutionary heroes like Rachel Corrie and the thousands of young Palestinian's, Iraqi's, Lebanese, Yemeni's and Afghani's just like her die their deaths like so many mute birds falling from the sky, falling like silent snowflakes... falling beyond the trivial concerns manufactured for its artists by the Empire.
They should at least get a mention...don't you think?

Great link-read the poignant piece on the "jumpers" of 9/11. Yes that was an incredible tragedy.....as was the tragedy of 500,000 estimated dead in Iraq due to Western sanctions in the 90's...or the thousands of Afghani civilians torn apart in Drone attacks that are now been visited upon Pakistan. Or just a few days ago the death of the idealists aboard the flotilla attacked by the Israeli State forces. The 3000 dead New Yorkers perhaps would have been alive today were it not for the ongoing humiliation and oppression of an entire nation-Palestine- by an American backed Israel-and the seething anger this causes throughout the Arab world.
