weiwei

WTF? Haven't they heard of the Streisand Effect?

"The internationally acclaimed Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has been missing for more than 24 hours after being detained at Beijing airport.

The artist was stopped while passing through security checks for a flight to Hong Kong.

No one has seen or heard from him since. The authorities have not commented."

Don't they realize they should just ignore things they don't like, just like art critics (should) do?

Johnathon Jones has more on this, likening Weiwei to Courbet and Michaeangelo.

I just emailed Christopher Finlayson, c.finlayson@parliament.govt.nz minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage. But my guess is the NZ government will be far too weak to even join the chorus of opposition from France, Germany, the UK and USA.

Good idea to email Finlayson, however the Government attitude to China is encapsulated in its response to the Railway workers unions cry to keep the railway workshops working in NZ.

The CEO of Kiwi Rail explicitly states China is cost competitive in comparison to NZ rail workshops, even if hundreds of millions of dollars are leaving the economy. Stephen Joyce, the Minister for Trade, is even more blunt is accusing the Union of xenophobia and quote
"we'd be buggered without China as a trade partner".

China has such economic might and such an authoritarian / fascist way of making this so. We can only pray that Weiwei appears again because international diplomacy will not work with China.
