The threat is simple, an artist threatens the nessessity of captialism, by will fully asking to be destroyed by it..

I wonder how this aligns with the socilist redistribution of wealth implicit in the 283 entrants $35 entry fee going into Dane Mitchells pocket?

A lottery?

Entry fees are for thieves, why aren't awards sponsored?

Since artists are the poorest group in the west, success is for the wealthy!

good question, but then aren't you asking for dirty capitalist money?

I cant think of one artist who willfully wants to be destroyed by capitalism, even artists like Shirin Neshat who's work is extremely political, and speaks against repression is happy to take the money, who knows perhaps she filters it back to repressed Iranians!

"dirty capitalist money", a lot of "set up individuals" are getting entertained at the expense of poor artists, I think the artist is in white clothing on this matter. there is nothing dirty about honest trade, oh and I take it you are one of those that suppose poor artists should donate all their earnings to charity... flipin heck

You always seem misread me Quinton, and it's probably my writing more than you. I was simply suggesting that perhaps its a bit hypocritical of one to expect the dirty capitalist that one apparently despises to support ones art.

I think I understand what you mean about set-up people benefiting from the arts, but then you have to ask yourself (if your an artist) why are you one? I know why I am, apart from the fact that I pretty much always have been, I enjoy having my say in whatever way I choose, and doing what I do when I want to etc. I accept I'll probably never get rich at it, if you consider money as wealth that is, But I also accept and willingly take the money I get for my work because I like to eat and drink and wear clothes!

What I'm not going to do is sit back and take handouts then criticize the creator of that money.

he he, umm perhaps I approach others heavy handedly or read into things too deep or perhaps you are one that can't stand that others may not agree with you or perhaps you can't sleep at night knowing you may have enemies, I myself like enemies, enemies are fun!

Certain people have always hated me, so I have grown under that fire! And I don't care if I am wrong either te he

I actually don't hate (despise) any person, at all. But I do despise certain actions, and "dirty capitalist" actions I certainly do despise.

If a "dirty capitalist" wishes to finally cough up what we artists have a right to, then I will honor that action, by receiving a good gesture. Good on good, who knew

jeez I don't care if people agree with me or not either.

All money is capitalist though, it's a capitalist invention, and not all capitalists are evil are they? Bill Gates and the evil Microsoft gives more money to charity than all New Zealand could only dream of having!

why do you think we artists have a "right" to things, what have you done that makes you deserving of being coughed up upon with someone else's dosh?

I suppose I am upset that it's an illusion that they hold out for us, and I can see that now, it's not that I want absolute glory and success, but I do believe we (artists) should be paid for showing our art instead of us paying (expensive contest fees/postage/framing etc) to have it shown and judged. Artists are propping up these privileged morons, when advertisers could be paying for it (like they do for sport).

Being also a creator of mp3 files, my stuff gets streamed copiously for free all over the internet, the websites grow rich on the back of the likes of me providing the entertainment. It's like a pub getting a band in selling shit loads of drinks and sending the band out saying "oh well fellas you got good exposure"

Another state sanctioned piece of anti-art; Anthony Gormleys fourth plinth project in Trafalgar Square, where people get to be a living sculpture for one hour. The main difference between this and Mitchells' work is that Gormleys' is unashamedly populist and involves the public where Mitchells' work is academic and exclusive. Both require the collusion of the curators and institutions for their tenuous legitimacy as art.

Dane Mitchell, Anthony Gormley etc, greedy capitalists? feeding off the poor repressed artists who paid $35 per entry for the Waikato award, or the poor struggling to pay the heating bill art hating taxpayer in London.

Hypocrisy is the greatest luxury, Raise the double standards! words from Michael Franti.

the Dainty tribe of Status Quo... happy to vent their troubles in paradise prepared by coke machines, "IS IT ART" peel off the label and see if you've won the correct answer..

Separating making money frm art isn't interesting, what kinds of power are being expressed is, claim to hate the greeedy, the academic, OK then stop following their logic, don't take the bait of their mechanism to suck you in, form your own machine scrambler... oppose with your own demands/ language, engage on your own terms.. I dare you.
obviously, you have that power.

Some say I have paid a price for speaking out, I have, I have paid entry into another house, well occupied, I like the people I meet here, it's a nice gang to spend time with. make a stand and fight the fire in your own back yard... accept the price, LOVE IT
