Thinking of sticks pointing out the idiots, when Duschamp and his group destroyed art. Was the stick not then firmly pointed at all those who (while revering Dushamp) continued to bath in the assumed glory of art by calling themselves artists!

Mr, anyone who calls themselves an artist is an artist, good grief, anyone with that contrary outlook must be the only non deranged person on the planet,

who would go about calling themselves an artist if they were not one?

whether or not they are relevant or contributing is a separate issue

And if you do not like their (such and suches) work, what makes you the judge over the likes or dislikes of others?

YEah, it's tricky ou know.. the masses poorly eductaed on a diet of servitude... still work with a currency that to the market doesn't exist.. I think there are producers and consumers... instead of artists i look for activism, antagonsim, agonism and everyones most misunderstood friend.. nihlism... which wass actually a westen term coined (by Burnouf) to translate the eastern concept/word nirvana...

Values and morality may not exist in actuality, but people continue to create them/it. And that makes them real, doing away with institutional extension of morality and values can never rid us of such restrictions. Have you ever been to a wedding and wondered how nonsecular the secular are? I mean why not spend the day at the beach?

right on flake! I like the idea of activism, antagonsim, agonism and everyone's most misunderstood friend.. nihilism...if that's who someone is! As I’ve always struggled with people who on the one hand dismiss something, while secretly being a part of it! Like people who criticize the curators and institutions who would in a heartbeat accept any little tidbit offered to them if it were ever offered.

Quint I think you missed my point! I'm not judging anyone, never do, never will, I'm just pointing out contradictions in some peoples ideologies. and pretty much every wedding Ive ever been to I'd rather have been at the beach! Rugby players are constantly saying they like to express themselves, isn't that an expression of being an artist?

I guess a big part of what I was questioning was, why, as it would seem to many people, does all art have to be angst filled, or have to be serious, political, or social? Is the only reason to visit a museum or gallery to be reminded of humanities failings?

Flake, how is your ( I wont call it art by your definition) activism, antagonsim, agonism and nihilism helping that poor afghani goat herder?

I guess in some rspects i agree with u MR....earnest political art can leave me a bit cold. In terms of art perhaps the best we can do is encourage a sense of vulnerability in the viewer....in the hope that they then will empathise more with the oppressed than the oppresser. [but that does mean that they need political insights that enable them to see past the media distortion]
in terms of nz art of recent times i only recall one political artwork and that was a piece by et al which dealt with palestine in some manner too oblique for my tastes.
As i say, perhaps the best we can hope for is to put out work that encourages the humanity in people rather than the alternative.
But i would still prefer a bad, didactic, hectoring artwork that directly confronted the facism of Israel over a planeload full of smart, specious, jargon friendly, esoteric, self-referential, "challenging", contemporaryart pieces that dealt in nothing really but the self aggrandisment of art-theorists.

Couldn’t agree with you more Mathew, planeloads of people who haven’t paid for their flight are always suspicious! But it's not earnest political art that particularly leaves me cold, in fact I appreciate it and think it is interesting, relevant, necessary et al. What I cant understand are people who endlessly go on as though art can serve no other purpose.

do you call the inability to effect change tolerance Flake? because we cant stop the oppression were tolerant of it? No NZ Government has stopped our armed forces leaving to fight other peoples wars, so it would seem we cant vote for change. You still haven't explained how Dane Mitchell's work actually helps the cause?

oh fuck it, huddeldsotn for all her instutionalism is a person who has shown some colour, a signal if you will decode it have a relationship with it, hat or love.. but this is the best we can get,.. from any of these instituions.. teh fact ath this work shat on itself means tolerance of a higher degree than those who complained, that's all... since we've hit a dead ceiling economically/ structurely.. since were trapped like rats at teh top of the barel and runnin gout of air.. any old trick that says this is fucked.. is like an extra breath of air, that's all, not that great.. but hey maybe the goat herader will get a deal and blow us out of the water first.!

shit somethings wrong with me coz I can understand you flake! your totally right! although isn't proving a negative deflating, don't ya think?
You say we have hit a dead ceiling, I am beginning to form the opinion, that this is not the end but actually the beginning, we have hit the start line,
bohemianism is back and it's bad. the last century, especially the last half was one big multinational lock down, and the arts suffered the most,
performers have been around since time began, and now they are free, expression is free and the race has begun, so mr that pile of rubbish is the diagnosis, and eyes are awakening to the real game

Think about how FEARED ARTISTS ARE, for their power... ordinary self generated power that any two bit slave could recover..

The threat is simple, an artist threatens the nessessity of captialism, by will fully asking to be destroyed by it..
