In your face NEW ZEALAND... !!!!!  Don't like it go HOME and hide, turn you tv's on and keep sucking. . .  then one day when you are big and strong strap your canvas, your perfectly crafted BOMB and throw your self at the devil  I AM WAITING and CAN"T WAIT TO MEET YOU..   !!!!!  My poor confused lamb.....

Who are we suppose to have answer the pathetic question "is it art?". I dare you to ask "what is it the art of " !!! There is a question.

I cannot be more happy to see the craft vs Art debate errupt so weakly over this.. all those humble craftspeople with their dreams of leading the way with  their trinkets... if only the hand of god would touch them, they pray.. and oh the consipracy .. the Academy the academic it's all smart people taking  it away from the us the good people... we who pay our taxes.. and send troops to Iraq.

because you think your work still has some nobel vestige of dignity, your screams demanding to be heard play out to the astonishing vision of "is it beautiful or not"... every artist whether they want to or not according to you status quo has only one option, is it beautiful!!!!  Work,  your robbed weath and it's traumatic memory,  punishing those that see you are duped slave, a trinket maker, go forth and rattle your cages!! OOOoooooo

They call them visionary when someone gets to shine a light on the complicit mass dellusion, be it relgion  or cultural corporatism...  dare I ask to take a moment and bask in the refection of emperors no clothes.. before it's rubbed out... as another apperation...

to MR Mark Hayens, only 26 hours of grinding.. you should see my list of indignities...

flake your right, and all who have a different view on it are wrong, simply because you say so. All opposing effort in relating to this piece mean nothing because all opposing views are blind, greedy and mindless. With this approach to genuine effort, why should your view on art be any more insightful.

Having not seen the other works in the competition I have to wonder if this says more about the rest of the entries? were the packing materials perhaps the best aspect of them?

How many times do we have to be told the story this piece tells us? In its absolute nothingness anyone can say pretty much anything about it! You can praise it or call it crap with all conviction because it’s nothingness means that anything can be refuted or validated, whatever is in our heads is the artwork. But what’s new, a man walked into the Mary Boon gallery in NY in the 90’s and wanted to buy the installation in the window, it was an electricians ladder and tools, he was fixing the lights! So we know from this story and the God (who’s hand didn’t touch this work either) knows how many times this has been done before, that anything can be seen as art given the right situation.

But I’m surprised you got so aggravated by this Flake, I had always thought of you from your writings here as being someone who got excited by fresh thinking? and if this work is as visionary as you seem to consider it, then you really don't need to be too smart to be a visionary these days!

Visionary isn't mystical, brother, it's just the ability, Ok in my humble opinion BLaKE, apple8, of pointing out the obvious, the guy who walked in and wantd to buy the window was fucking cool, that's what!! the fact that he could see something, and what did he see, you want it expalined to you... fcuk man, where do you start... get an enema, listen to some Jazz, smoke some crack, don't take your self so seriously ,

there's personal opinion and combined the visible dynamics of power being played out by those who have it against those who don't... while some of us are still trying to customise out cars, others are trying to do with out the car.. if you think this piece of conceptual art is as deadend and as one liner as trying to suggest new ways of travel.. then your just not trying.. it's the visible jealousy that totally wipes out new ideas from being established.. that and the way they undermine the legitimacy of the standard cars high price!!!!

I dont think that this victory will last, they don't... but while it's memory last, like the braying of the donky I so adore I will Sing my heart out VICTORY VICTORY FO R YOU AND ME.. FREE thinkers in this closed down world... here come the slaves!!!!!

"it's the visible jealousy that totally wipes out new ideas from being established.."

Huh?

Where exactly is the new idea here that jealousy is wiping out ? that's the whole fucking point brother :) don’t you advocate free thinking and fuck the establishment? or are you saying you should be the establishment, so you can then exclude all those crafty people who don’t agree with you, just like those who have the power now exclude you perhaps !

It is the constant regurgitation of tired old ideas like this that wipe out new ones from being established, and the recognition of the regurgitated through rewarding it with prizes like this, and your defense here just amplify and encourage it. Why bother thinking at all when a copy will suffice to win a major art award?

So I just don’t get it Flake, your here as the defender of what?

Yu see novelty, i see invention, whawt was invented is the sharp articulatness of the meaning behind the gesture.. This anit-work work is always going to be anti institutional because it undermines this sacred slavery we call captialism.. you say it's old, the resistencnet is old that doesn't make it irrelevant.. i fcukign hate craft for the shear fact that the only things that counts is that it's finished, what ever it is bomb painted chest of drawers computer.. doesn't matter... art is BIG BUSINESS, there are scams, bullshit artists.. crappy contemporary art values.. but this work says that exactly.. A art competetiton .. WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT... i mean duchamp blew away the academy when !!! I do contradict my self, i stand in my condradiction , I WANT PROGRESS/ and IT"S TOO LATE WERE FUCKED.. .. waht can I say...

Oh and the point I think was that to attempt to pull the plug on shitty ideas (like art competetions) wth such a merciful cut, is a noble deed... that any business should be applauded for.. encouraged to do... let it spread like an ausie bush fire.. do some good!

I'd suggest smoke some more crack and listen to some more jazz, and as you say don't take your self so seriously, were not fucked yet :)

Duchamp may have blown his academy away, but just like your resistance it’s relatives live on! and I don't even support it!

I just don't see how this work actually resists. It is irrelevant, what exactly was the sharp articulateness of the meaning behind the gesture? And it’s for sure not anti institutional because they gave it (and I assume he accepted it) grand poo baa in their art competition that you so fucking despise! So you love and furiously defend the very thing that wins the very recognition of the people and establishment you despise?

Do you really think this is progress?

Wouldn't the noblest resistance to art competitions simply be to not enter them?

"The liberal institution, however, is not so cavalier about appearances as the market is about meaning. Like Jeremy Bentham's benevolent warden, the institution's curators hold a public trust. They must look carefully and genuinely care about what artists "really" mean-and therefore they must, almost of necessity, distrust appearance-distrust the very idea of appearances, and distrust most of all the appearance of images that, by the virtue of the pleasure they give, are efficacious in their own right. The appeal of these images amounts to a kind of ingratitude, since the entire project of the new institution has been to lift the cruel burden of efficacy from the work of art and make it possible for artists to practice that "plain honesty"of which no great artist has yet been capable, nor ever wished to be."

"more to the point ways of handing out hard earned cash to art works in a spirit of generosity and support"

I totally agree with you Flake, I see Dane Mitchell being awarded this prize as being more of a publicity stunt than it was a recognition of Contemporary art! Both for the event, and for the people involved who got their faces on TV for their Andy Warhol moment.

How do you fairly spread the communal wealth of the arts, don’t take it in taxes in the first place? Or rely on who?

Don’t you you have to define beauty first? I would hazard a guess that Flake found the pile of rubbish beautiful, if one took the meaning of finding something beautiful literally. And by the very act of winning didn’t Mitchell produce the very efficacy desired by the institution?

I’ll make you a Tea any time your in Christchurch Flake.

Irony. Can't live with it can't live without it.

Provides the critical distance needed to get the gestalt.

The devil is not in the details but in the Big Obvious Picture.

Irony provides the depth-of-field needed to get the Big Picture.
