"The common quality veiled behind any uncommon artist is invention. Art is a useless invention. It's uselessness increases it's value to us. It is possible to sustain yourself in a material sense by marketing the entertaining aspects of the useless things we make. It is here art is not completely useless. Watch out for this because vision can be arrested and the inventor thus made a common market slave. But the market has no vision. Therefore art has no direction. Vision leads the inventor, so the inventor should remain in this position". Quint Baker

Yes, but what material sustains a vision? I think we might be a little lost in the sustaining part. That is not about a market within a work of art, as if art should reflect that. For example, I think artworks should not be sold within gallery spaces. I think artists should pay the galleries 30% to 40% commission on each work they own inside it, as if they were for sale and as if they are a gallery selling it to themselves. Art then would have a direction because it would be contained inside of the vision.

Yes I agree. That would also save the artists a lot of money.

It is in my argument that art is intended for the benefit of the artist, not the market. And that vision is within an individual and not the collective.

Now you agree. Great. That's just great.

I would also so much like to agree when it suits me.

Whats wrong with agreeing? Everyone is right and everyone is wrong. Everything has complete meaning and everything is meaningless. This is a conversation, on one hand it is worth me talking to you and on the other I'd be better off reading business news? I am learning who you are through a peep hole.

Then you'd agree that marketing the entertaining aspects of art makes art less useless?

Maybe we have different tastes and that is where our meanings diverge.

That is exactly my point, once art is made useful (by it's marketable value) the artist is then lead astray. Only when art is in it's meaningless state is it true to it's vision.
