Kylin O’Brien’s Supercontinental Migration explores 250 million years of Earthly habitation through the imagined lives of Earth’s land masses and ancient horseshoe crabs.

Across the walls, poetic images of land and water in transitional phases present the migration of continents—both real and imagined, from Pangaea and Panthalass to various locations.

O'Brien's celebration of the sublimity of millions of years of animal, rock, and water shifting is embodied in her daily shifting  of  horseshoe crab sculptures across the exhibition space—each day of the horseshoe crabs’ “migration” across the space, representing a spatiotemporal shift of approximately 16 million years.

About the Artist

A New York City born, Brooklyn-based artist, Kylin O’Brien holds a BA in Philosophy from Vassar College and a BA (Honours) in Contemporary Creative Practice from Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK, where she was awarded a part-time lectureship, while pursing advanced multimedia studies. Kylin has enjoyed solo exhibitions at Feature INC Gallery in NYC and Open Source Gallery in Brooklyn and participated in numerous group exhibitions. A Brooklyn Arts CouncilAwesome Foundation, and Pro Arts award winner, she has also had public works commissioned and displayed in Wynwood Miami, West Oakland, Brooklyn, and at Art Basel Miami.

In addition to her studio practice, Kylin is currently directing multiple initiatives, collaborations, workshops and presentations. Known for her multidisciplinary work invoking organically occurring forms, simple symbols and elemental ideas to stimulate wonder and mindfulness, Kylin utilizes both contemporary cultural metaphors and a raw symbolism resonant within ancient imagery, creatures, myths, and philosophies to access enduring themes. Her current work is complex, not complicated, and the key to its ideation resides within a willingness to entertain such a subtle, but quintessential, distinction.
