Rebecca Wallis - Manawatu debut

Rebecca Wallis
at Zimmerman Art Gallery
1 May 2015 - 31 May 2015

Added by Zimmerman

Rebecca Wallis’ first show at Zimmerman Art Gallery comprises five gouache paintings on canvas.

These large abstract works are, paradoxically, the product of the artist’s exploration of small, specific emotions.

Tiny, invisible feelings and desires are given tangible form, expressed by the artist in delicate washes and sweeps of dissolving pigment.

“It’s because of the insignificance of these tiny feelings that I’ve considered giving them the dignity of an image – the size of a small being, where they hang suspended, recoiled, needing completion.” - Rebecca Wallis

From rich depths colour flows, ebbs and fragments, suggesting both the intensity and fragility of human emotion.

The title of each work tantalises with the promise of some explanation or insight - A Haunting Ache, A Bewilderment, A Suspense – but labels like these provide scant assurance, inadequate to fully convey the emotion and tensions inherent in each piece.

“My work is process driven and I'm interested in finding sense from my work that pushes and pulls me, as the viewer, work that provokes a continuous curiosity." - Rebecca Wallis

A former winner of the Walker & Hall Art Award, Wallis’ work has also been selected for a number of significant national art awards, including the Wallace Art Awards (2014, 2009 and 2008), the Painting and Printmaking Art Awards (2012 and 2009), and the National Contemporary Art Awards (2011).

Wallis holds a Masters Degree from Goldsmiths College of Art in London.
