Lianne Edwards
at Antoinette Godkin
21 Oct 2011 - 19 Nov 2011

Added by Vav God Edwards' latest works continue her exploration of the relationship between humans and nature. In the Containment works she utilises postage stamps containing birds and butterflies of the world - preserving traces of their existence, recognising that one can preserve thousands of images and still not the actual organism. In the Hearing Bone works she presents us with 'otoliths' after carefully dissecting them from fish carcusses. Found in various forms in all vertebrates (fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals - including humans, and birds) they are loosely called 'hearing bones' - indicators of sound, gravity, balance, movement & direction. Like the postage stamps they also record traces of existence, for in the natural course of things they become part of the microfossils on the seafloor, and scientifically they are used to age fish, recording time/age much as the rings of a tree do.
