Kate Elder
at Zimmerman Art Gallery
1 Mar 2016 - 31 Mar 2016

Added by Zimmerman

The intriguing works in Kate Elder's exhibition at Zimmerman Art Gallery call to mind landscape forms.

On one level, Elder's sculpted works echo the curve and flow of natural terrain, the patterns of hills and valleys, smoothly carved out over the millennia.

On another level, the works reflect the artist’s fascination with social landscapes, the rigid constructs and borders within which our thoughts and lives are ordered and contained.

Kate Elder: Borderline - artist statement

“My sculptures try to evoke the sense of the landscape without literally representing one. They are static while also being changeable.

As is the case with landscapes, one’s viewpoint can dramatically change their aspect.

As well as the geographic landscape, I’m also interested in political landscapes and the concept of borders and physical boundaries.

As much as we desire to control it geographically, politically and socially, our landscape is always changing. It is never static.”
