At Home, a series of 13 new works, is on display at ZIMMERMAN from 1 to 30 November. The artist provides the following background commentary to this new series:

"I've always been drawn to those precious little intense studies of light, colour and form inherent in the still life genre, which has been around for hundreds of years but still manages to be significant. Typically, common place objects were used and many were filled with symbolism as in the vanitas paintings which, while possibly containing lovely objects, always included some reference to man's mortality - most often a human skull, burning candles or decaying flowers. It was meant not only to be a work of art, but also to carry an important moral message. Coincidently, I came upon a large dead goat with a magnificent set of horns washed up on the shore at Paekakariki. I couldn't bear to let that beautiful head go to waste, so it eventually found its way into my paintings."

"It wasn't my intention to use objects in a symbolic way, rather I was drawn to their shape and colour, and to the sheer pleasure of the intense scrutiny and personal engagement required to paint these staged objects. Many are simple but treasured possessions; others are family heirlooms. All are local. While these paintings cannot help but to have very personal stories, I hope viewers will bring their own meaning to the work."

Elspeth Shannon holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from Massey University.
