ARTMOSPHERE at ZIMMERMAN: Links Across the Gorge

Events > Exhibitions

Jan Kerr, Sally Maguire, Don Hill and Helmut Hirler
at Zimmerman Art Gallery
1 Mar 2012 - 31 Mar 2012

Added by Zimmerman Throughout the month of March, ZIMMERMAN will be featuring selected works from Woodville’s ARTMOSPHERE Gallery. We hope this glimpse into some of the unique and varied art work available from ARTMOSPHERE will tempt you to make the short trip over to Woodville, to view more of what ARTMOSPHERE has to offer. Why is ZIMMERMAN featuring works from ARTMOSPHERE? ZIMMERMAN and ARTMOSPHERE are located on opposite sides of the Manawatu Gorge. Since August 2011, several major slips have rendered the Manawatu Gorge route impassable, closing off the primary link between the Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay regions. Despite ongoing efforts to restore the route as soon as possible, latest estimates are that the Gorge route will remain closed until mid 2012. What is the effect of ongoing closure of the Manawatu Gorge? While there is an alternative route linking the Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay regions, that route enables traffic to bypass Woodville, a small township to the east of the Gorge. Woodville’s main street is lined with businesses that have, for many years, served large numbers of “pit stop” travellers. The closure of the Manawatu Gorge, combined with the availability of a bypass route, has resulted in a sharp decrease in trade for Woodville businesses. How does this relate to ARTMOSPHERE? ARTMOSPHERE Gallery is located in the main street of Woodville, a road that previously enjoyed a regular, busy flow of traffic. Owners Sally Maguire and Helmut Hirler say that, before the Gorge closure, around 90% of ARTMOSPHERE patrons were visitors from outside Woodville. The resultant drop in traffic after the Gorge closure, combined with the availability of a bypass route, has had a noticeable impact on the gallery, and on the number of people stopping to enjoy the works of the artists the gallery represents. What sort of artwork does ARTMOSPHERE show? ARTMOSPHERE shows a range of artworks, including fine art photography, oil paintings, sculpture, glass, pottery and jewellery. A small selection of the works available from ARTMOSPHERE are being exhibited at ZIMMERMAN during the month of March, to give visitors to ZIMMERMAN a taste of what is available. The exhibited works comprise works by the following artists: Helmut Hirler (internationally acclaimed infra-red photographer, and co-owner of ARTMOSPHERE), Sally Maguire (oil painter, and co-owner of ARTMOSPHERE), Don Hill (oil painter, most well known for his portrayal of rural New Zealand scenes), and Jan Kerr (multi-media sculptor, using paper mâché and recycled materials, such as fabric, copper wire and beads) To see more of what ARTMOSPHERE has to offer, simply pop across to visit the gallery in Woodville, at 92 Vogel Street. ARTMOSPHERE’s open hours are 10am–5pm Thursday to Monday, and other times by appointment. For more information, simply contact ARTMOSPHERE at (06) 376 4300 or email contact@artmosphere-gallery.com We hope you will call into ZIMMERMAN this month to enjoy some of the works on display and, if you are so inspired, to make the short trip over to Woodville.
